The First Peoples’ Principles of Learning (FPPLs) were created in BC to help teachers and students understand and learn about Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and learning. Teachers use the FPPLs to integrate Indigenous knowledge into the classroom respectfully and meaningfully.
The FPPLs help BC’s education system take one step toward reconciliation and a way to empower indigenous learners. It also helps foster mutual respect and understanding between students. Teachers can use the FPPLs to guide their lessons by opening different teaching and learning content interpretations. For example, “Learning takes patience and time” can be one of the FPPLs used in Science and Math lessons since both topics take time to learn and understand.
